Thanks for commenting, Liz! I would love for there to be more discussion about this. I would love for libraries and library associations to offer more services, programs and technologies that are (to quote Mark Shuttleworth) "free of charge, free to modify, free of murky encumbrances."

zomg!
I have always wanted to do these things in libraries, but OSS people are hard to come by in Kansas.
It should be noted that almost every significant NEKLS project uses OSS, Linux, OpenBSD, Postfix, Squid, Wordpress, MySql, Apache, OpenBiblio (yes, we have a little library using an OSS automation system!)... and on and on.
I've always wanted to do a community history wiki, where the old folks come in and dictate their story to eager young volunteers who input the info into the wiki. They could even scan the folks' old photos and add those. The possibilities are truly endless there.
We had a mini discussion of "why OSS hasn't caught on in libraries" on our blog a while back, though unfortunately the commenter didn't come back. I was sad. I was hoping it would lead to a conversation very much like this post. :(
So thanks for bringing it up!
