Gorman With the Wind

The biggest irony in Michael Gorman’s two-part blog post entitled “Web 2.0: The Sleep of Reason” (part I and part II) is that he clearly doesn’t understand how the internet (including, but in no way limited to, Wikipedia) works, or he’s willfully misrepresenting how it works in order to make his point. Whichever the case, it means that he’s not an authoritative, reliable source, and his writings on the matter cannot be trusted.

Anything else I could possibly say about his two-part essay has already been said, and much better than I could have done, by Jason Griffey, Karen G. Schneider, Jessamyn West, and Meredith Farkas.

UPDATE: Clay Shirkey has an excellent critique of Gorman’s posts here.

All that I have to say has already been said. Only one other thing…I always thought Michael Gorman was a professional, one that we could always hold in esteem. I guess we learn something new everyday!

An acting dean recently admonished students in a new student Orientation session “not to listen to all the rumor and unsubstantiated information on blogs” about a certain happening at my university. My first reaction was “yay! Acting Dean reads blogs!” Then I realized had she read the blog coverage she would have seen it was NOT filled with rumor, and actually represented some of the only journalism about the situation to that point. Sure, some of the editorializing on the part of students countered her position (which was her boss’ position), but the information was solid. Therefore, she was listening to second hand accounts of the blog posts, or, some might say, rumor.

When will the Critics with Agendas and High Office be taken to task for indulging in the very same activities they so loudly decry?

Sorry to get long winded here Josh but your point is extremely important, and unfortunately, not isolated. Thanks for the space to say something.

As long as you keep saying smart, passionate things, you can have as much space as you want, Jenn.
