Thanks for the thought provoking post.
For me the concept popped out most thoroughly in the sentences, "I think a library can use new technologies and tools (like blogs, wikis, IM, SMS) to achieve '2.0-ness,' but only if those tools are the right tools for the job. The job being: incorporating the ideas and concepts behind Web 2.0: the library as an interactive, user-friendly platform; an architecture of participation that encourages users to add value to the library as they use it; social networking; perpetual beta." You have sent me spinning off in a new direction with my thoughts.
My diet doesn't allow ice cream, so I'll have some coffee instead!

Great post! I teach 'technology' classes for librarians. We call many of them "Library 2.0" classes. While that does capitalize on the 'buzz', I emphasize that it's not about the technology, it's about services and attitude and community. And that it's not really something new. It's what libraries & library staff are (should be?) all about - providing services that patrons want AND need. And doing so while meeting ever-changing community expectations. Like you, I love Darlene's "booksnstuff...." equation. Now back to my grape popsicles. http://tinyurl.com/2xvdzm

You're right, Steve, ice cream bars do need to be an essential part of the equation. Dare we dream of a world where libraries and ice cream bars go hand-in-hand? Oh, we dare!

I think you hit on a new equation:
(books ‘n stuff + people + radical trust) x participation x (ice cream bar)^2 = library 2.0.0.3
