You’re much more generous than I am, Blythe. I think Davies is a really sloppy writer, and these episodes were sloppier than usual.

I had a different response. I read the whole story as The Dr.’s surprising inability to come to terms with his own mortality. (His song is ending.) Lately many things have been happening that are eroding his identity: He’s not the last of his people, a little bubble of Gallifrey was still in existence…he even perceives regeneration as the end of something–himself. For me, the slightly erratic plot reflected the perturbations of the Dr.’s thoughts and emotions.

Absolutely! As I said over at FF, ‘too many endings.’ It should have ended with The Doctor in Wilf’s arms. All the saying goodbye just drained the episode of any emotion- quite the opposite from what was intended I am sure.
